High Voltage Operator - Refresher


The High Voltage Operator Refresher course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to understand and safely act as an Authorised Operator on High Voltage plant. Emphasis is placed on practical switching exercises, performed on the Client's own HV equipment. Participants are also taught switching theory and the responsibilities of permit users and recipients. This Course addresses standards and legislation, and the site's specific HV procedures, including switching officer responsibilities, access, test and work permit issuing and recipient duties.

Units of Competency

Our Courses are mapped to a number of Units of Competency from the following training packages:
UEP Electricity Supply Industry - Generation sector training package and
UET Transmission, Distribution and Rail sector training package.
Certification will depend upon course duration and content of the tailored program.

Course aim

High Voltage Operator training is required for operators to switch HV plant and issue permits. Initial training is then refreshed every 3 years to maintain current competency. The aim of the course is to provide the participant with the opportunity to refresh competency, knowledge and skills to safely act as a High Voltage operator.

Learning activities

Thomson Bridge tailors HV Operator training programs to the client's specific site, equipment and enterprise procedures. The course includes theory and practical exercises.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of a Refresher Course, a participant will have refreshed their understanding of the following:
The legislative framework that governs work activities on their site
Relevant regulations and Enterprise procedures
Hazards associated with equipment and balance of plant
The work permit process from application, preparation, isolation, issue, completion, cancelation and restoration, in compliance with the enterprise procedures
Operation of high voltage, low voltage, control and protection devices associated with the site, in compliance with the enterprise procedures
Application and removal of fixed and portable earthing equipment, in compliance with enterprise procedures.


2 days (duration may vary subject to site, equipment and complexity of switching tasks)


Maximum of 8 attendees.

Equipment & PPE

Access to HV apparatus for practical exercises and assessment;
Site portable earthing equipment, voltage detection equipment;
Site approved PPE for switching exercises; and
Access to SCADA (where applicable).

Attendee Prerequisites

Participants must be literate in spoken English and competent in reading, writing and numeracy;
Completion of a recipient in charge or recipient training; and
Electrical appreciation is preferred but not required.
