Rail Corridor Construction Course (RCCC)

Description

The Rail Corridor Construction Course (RCCC) is an induction program designed for Work Group Supervisors, Project Managers and Engineers in the rail industry. This course has been tailored based on industry best-practice and to be in accordance with the relevant standards and legislation. The course will be supervised and/or trained by an experienced professional, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience to the learner.

This Facilitator-led workshop takes participants on a journey through a real-to-life rail construction project at the Rail Academy, Newport. This workshop:

  • Reinforces essential rail knowledge through application
  • Reinforces the rail mindset through via simulated live problem-based scenarios
  • Focuses on hands-on, application-based learning experiences

Recognition of Prior Experience

Work group supervisors and project engineers with a minimum 3 years of experience are eligible to proceed directly to the assessment, without attending the face-to-face workshop.

Course aim

The Course aims to provide participants with a greater understanding of ‘rail essentials’ content, and enable learners to make decisions that encourage the following key elements of a rail mindset:

  • Access control
  • Protect personnel
  • Protect public
  • Protect rolling stock
  • Protect assets
  • Communication

Target learner group

The target learners for this instance of course delivery are Work Group Supervisors, Project Managers and Engineers in rail. Those who work on rail must maintain currency of skills and competency in a range of safety and technical competencies. Relevant safety related training programs are often mandated by regulation or industry agreements and documented in state codes of practice. Due to the significant safety risks in the industry these employees work within highly proceduralised workplaces with mature workplace safety systems. Workers in the industry are required to regularly complete workplace safety risk assessment and work planning documentation, and therefore bring a solid foundational understanding of risk assessment and workplace safety documentation concepts and practices to the program.

Learning activities

Delivery includes:

  • Trainer led classroom presentations
  • Theory assessment
  • Onsite practical exercises and assessment

Learning outcomes

By completing the Rail Corridor Construction course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply basic principles & mindset for rail construction. Including protecting the rail, rail law for rail safety and MTM & VicTrack Procedures
  • Recognise and assign roles responsibilities including the Site Engineer, Project Engineer and Supervisor
  • Identify hazards on a rail construction site
  • Determine effective control measures to eliminate or reduce safety risks of hazards
  • Determine the required permits for rail construction works
  • Identify the time it takes for permits to be processed
  • Recognise circumstances in which a permit renewal is required
  • Identify resources required to complete work activities
  • Develop an awareness of what a Track Force Protection Coordinator (TFPC) needs to include in an Rail Safety Worksite Hazard Assessment (RSWHA)
  • Complete Work Group Supervisor (WGS) Pre-Work Briefing form
  • Respond effectively to discovering an unknown underground asset
  • Respond effectively to another work crew within the vicinity
  • Respond effectively to non-compliance with specifications
  • Describe the track reinstatement process

Equipment & PPE

Learners are required to have the following to participate in this course:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. Hard Hat, Safety Footwear, Rail Approved Hi-Vis Clothing, Safety Glasses, Gloves, Long Sleeve Shirt and Trousers)
  • Stationary (e.g. Pen, Pencil, etc.).

Course Entry Requirements

To participate in this course, learners are required to have the following prerequisites:

  • TLIF2080 Safely Access the Rail Corridor (SARC) (Metro approved)
  • Safely Work in the Rail Corridor (SWIRC)

Accreditation Status

Non-accredited.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive Certificate of Completion - Rail Corridor Construction Course (RCCC)
