Description

Thomson Bridge is accredited by the Global Wind Organisation to deliver GWO Basic Safety Training (BST). This course is delivered by experienced ESI professionals, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience to the learner.

Our GWO programs are delivered in accordance with the following GWO Basic Safety Training Standard:

  • GWO BST First Aid
  • GWO BST Working at Heights
  • GWO BST Fire Awareness
  • GWO BST Manual Handling

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded GWO certification for Basic Safety Training. Results will be recorded on the GWO global database (WINDA).

Additionally, students are awarded several nationally accredited Units of Competency (listed below).

Course aim

This program is designed for operators, technicians and specialists working in wind turbines. It is designed to train and re-assess learners to practice and maintain safe work practices and everyday tasks, during rescue/evacuation activities.

Target learner group

GWO Basic Safety Training (BSTR) is targeted at personnel who are currently working in the wind industry, and will have their duties in a wind turbine environment.

Those who work on wind turbines must maintain currency of skills and competency in a range of safety and technical competencies.

Learning activities

Delivery includes:

  • Trainer led classroom presentations
  • Theory assessment
  • Onsite practical exercises and assessment
  • Using Height Safety equipment in a range of work simulated scenarios and applications.
  • For CPR, we use Laerdal Medical's Resusci Anne QCPR resuscitation dummy and defibrillator system, which provides immediate digital interactive reporting on your technique.
  • The Fire Extinguisher is a digital fire training system, called BullsEye, designed by Haagen, the global leaders in fire extinguisher and emergency response training hardware.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the GWO BST Refresher, participants' knowledge on awareness of the hazards encountered when working within the wind industry and how to control and mitigate these hazards will be re-assessed. The BST refresher will re-assess participants' knowledge, skills and confidence to appropriately respond in the event of an emergency and to increase their safety through proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), emergency equipment and procedures. On successful completion of this module the learner will have been refreshed and re-assessed on their ability to:

  • Identify and mitigate risks and hazards in a wind farm.
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider.
  • Recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies until emergency services arrive.
  • Effectively confine and manage an emergency scene
  • Correctly perform LV rescue
  • Correctly perform rescue from heights.
  • Correctly respond to a fire emergency (confining and extinguishing)
  • Perform CPR according to ARC guidelines.
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Effectively review and communicate details of the incident.
  • Appropriately debrief from the incident.
  • Apply correct manual handling techniques.

Course Entry Requirements

To participate in this course, learners are required to:

  • have completed a GWO Basic Safety Training initial program and possess valid BST/BSTR certificates or training records in WINDA for the relevant Modules prior to attending BSTR training.
  • be sufficiently fit to participate. Prior to the commencement of our ‘refresher’ course, where the participant has not completed their ‘initial’ training with Thomson Bridge, a review of previously attained Units of Competency will determine what units we will issue to the learner upon successful completion of the course.

BSTR Modules may potentially be physically demanding. A medical declaration is required prior to undertaking the course, to ensure students are physically capable to perform the physical tasks, in particular the practical activities associated with working at heights.

Each attendee will be required to provide their unique GWO WINDA ID when enrolling in the training. For more information please visit https://winda.globalwindsafety.org
