EXPERTise 2.0

Thomson Bridge and Macquarie University form strategic alliance to enhance operational performance in mission critical roles in the energy sector.

Introducing EXPERTise - an innovative online cognitive assessment tool for the Energy industry.

Thomson Bridge is delighted to announce a strategic alliance with Macquarie University aimed at optimising operational performance in mission-critical roles within the energy sector. This collaboration has resulted in the introduction of an innovative online tool that quickly assesses and establishes the diagnostic expertise of people performing high consequence roles across the energy industry.

Designed specifically for various roles such as power systems controllers, field and substation high voltage switching operations and wind farm technicians, this diagnostic tool, called EXPERTise 2.0, has been crafted over 15 years, by organisational psychologists at Macquarie University. It has undergone rigorous testing both in laboratory and real-world environments, demonstrating a relationship between higher performance on EXPERTise 2.0 and improved operational performance, along with reduced mental workload.

Program lead, Professor Mark Wiggins said, “The commercialisation agreement is a great example of the importance Macquarie University places on collaborating with industry to exchange knowledge, expertise and resources. By working with industry partners, such as Thomson Bridge, Macquarie can gain insights into real-world challenges and industry trends, while also sharing their academic research and intellectual capital.”

Thomson Bridge Manging Director, Lisa Parkinson, says, “We believe that EXPERTise 2.0 provides a distinctive advantage in the market by enriching training with an evidence-based assessment of operational performance. We propose to use this tool in 2 ways, firstly, as part of selected course offerings pre- and post-training, as it offers individuals strategies that provide pathways to skill mastery; and, secondly, to conduct evaluations with organisations to target and evaluate strategies that contribute to organisational expertise".

“Thomson Bridge is now part of a global training provider, RelyOn Nutec, which is servicing the energy industry across 20-plus countries. This global footprint gives us a great opportunity to introduce EXPERTise for mission-critical roles within the energy sector.”

EXPERTIise 2.0 has been developed by Macquarie University with funding from the Australian Research Council Linkage Grant scheme to support the development and maintenance of diagnostic expertise in complex environments.

Key features of the EXPERTise 2.0 include:

  • Enables targeted, personalsed training programs - this means that training can be focused on where your workforce needs it most
  • Assists in upskilling from within your workforce
  • Detailed Reports: The tool generates comprehensive reports based on established 'norms', providing insights into an individual's expected expertise level given their experience.
  • Strengths and Development Areas: It offers opportunities to identify areas of strength and areas for further development, helping individuals optimise their skills.
  • Individual and Organisational Evaluations: The tool provides reports at the organisational level, providing valuable insights into proficiency and helping organisations support the development of diagnostic expertise.
  • Multi-purpose Application: EXPERTise 2.0 serves a wide array of purposes, including selection, evaluating training outcomes and conducting assessments.

Additionally, this tool opens doors for assessing organisational capabilities and diagnostic expertise, providing invaluable insights for organisations seeking improvement and development.

Initially, Thomson Bridge will incorporate EXPERTise into its High Voltage training programs for participants undertaking switching in the field, substations and wind farms. It will also be used to support safety training initiatives, enabling educators to target specific areas for development. Additionally, where organisations want to establish benchmarking and insights for seeking improvement and development, Thomson Bridge will provide a consulting service.
